How much?

The costs of the procedures are indicated on their own articles. However, I'm gonna warn you that these are rough estimates of the prevailing costs of these procedures. These may differ from doctor to doctor, clinic to clinic.. It is still best to discuss the financial matters with your surgeon. And, a second opinion would not hurt you.

Good luck!

Choosing the Right Surgeon

Unfortunately, here in the Philippines, the law is lenient regarding its guidelines of who are allowed to do Plastic Surgery Procedures. I know you will be shock when I tell you that any person with a medical license or who passed the Physician's Licensure Examination can do this procedure even without sufficient training. So, your safeguard to a safer and satisfying transformation can be ensured only by you by following these tips:

  1. Learn about the procedures that interest you.
  2. Learn about and verify your selected surgeon's qualifications and experience. This is the most important. Be sure to check his affiliations and the plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery societies he is a member of.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Get second opinions.
  5. Talk to other plastic surgery patients.
  6. View before and after pictures.
  7. Get referrals from friends and family if possible.
  8. Learn what to expect before, during, and after your desired procedure.
  9. Evaluate your motivations, goals, and expectations of plastic surgery.

Doing these things will help to ensure that your plastic surgery experience is an overwhelming success!

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery, a.k.a Bariatric Surgery, makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss.

The most common gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

In normal digestion, food passes through the stomach and enters the small intestine, where most of the nutrients and calories are absorbed. It then passes into the large intestine(colon), and the remaining waste is eventually excreted.

In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum).

This procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure) or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (laparoscopic approach).

MY ACCUTANE EXPERIENCE

My Acutane Experience

I have been suffering with acne since I was 14 years old. I had tried all prescription topical medications there were and had undergone several procedures like comedo extraction regularly. I can say that my acne was controlled until I reached 4th year college (with the thesis and graduation coming up and all those stresses) when acne suddenly flared up. It was not your ordinary pimple, but really big ones all over my face - we referred to it in Medicine as fluctuant cystic acne probably with sinus tracts. It just means that I had really big pimples with pus and other pimples are just so big that they rupture and communicate with other through tracts underneath the skin. In short, it was the worst!!! My derma was so surprised when I consulted her.

Without doing any detailed history and thorough examination, she recommended Isotretinoin. The brand name is Accutane in the US and Roaccutane in the Philippines for it is marketed by Roche. The good thing with this oral medication, as she explained, is that it targets the 4 MAIN FACTORS in acne formation. But she warned me that it was expensive. It cost me around 22,000 pesos - a regimen of oral drug costing 120 pesos a day for 6 months. I consulted my parents first. Fortunately, they financed it.

It was a tiny maroon capsule, but it really worked wonders. In just around a month, my face improved. Although, the most undesirable and conspicuous side effect was the chapping of my lips. It really dried my skin and lips. I had to liberally put moisturizer, sometimes petroleum jelly, on my skin and bring lip balm most of the time. Fortunately, that was the only side effect I experienced. In the US, there were reports of depression and suicide associated with Accutane intake especially among teenagers. It is also a teratogen which can cause birth defects if given to a pregnant mom. Accutane is a REGULATED DRUG here in the Philippines. You cannot get it just anywhere. During that time, I had availed it only through my physician and at Mercury Drug Quiapo Branch. Other Mercury Drug Branches don't carry it. In the Mercury Drug, I had to furnish them with two copies of prescription and present an ID. One time, they even called my doctor to confirm the prescription. Actually, there is a topical formulation of Accutane here in the Philippines manufactured by Stiefel. But, my dermatologist warned me against using those. It is not as effective as the oral Accutane medication.

After 6 months, my face really cleared up, of course except those deep scars which are inevitable on cystic acne. I was so happy that the derma brought it up. Actually, she had been recommending it even during the first years of my acne. However, I turned it down because of its cost. But, it's worth it, every peso of it. Now, after 3 years, my face is really acne-free. I would sometimes have a pimple, but they would appear singly. My derma said that I would expect it to be like this for the next five years or so, but of course, I still have to have regular peeling and apply topical tretinoin regularly.

I am now saving up to have my scars filled up with collagen fillers.

P.S. I reckon that it would be better if I post my pre- and post- Accutane pictures. Ok, I'll look for those photos.

Acne Treatment

These are the 4 IMPORTANT FACTORS in the formation of ACNE:
  1. Increased Sebum or Oil Production
  2. Abnormal keratinization (sloughing off of dead skin cells) causing comedones (whiteheads and blackheads)
  3. Proliferation of Propionebacterium acne bacteria
  4. Inflammation
To effectively control acne, the goal should be a comprehensive treatment regimen tragetting these 4 important factors in acne formation. The following are the different treatment options:

Prescription Medications for Treating Acne
Note: Take note that all stated above target at least one of the important factors. Keeping this in mind, it can be deduced that an effective treatment regimen of acne entails a combination of these prescription medications and probably, the physical procedures below.

Dental Implants

Most implant procedures involve placing metal anchors into the bone of the jaw, allowing the anchor and bone to fuse, placing an extension or abutment in the anchor, and fixing a prosthetic tooth, or crown, on the extension.

Advantages:
However, the process of obtaining dental implants can be time-consuming, expensive, and success is not guaranteed. A patient considering this surgery should gather as much information as possible about the procedure and about the dentist who will be performing the procedure.

Dental Bonding

In dental bonding, a composite resin material is applied to the tooth and then sculpted and shaped to cover damaged areas or to fill in gaps. This material comes in several shades so it can be matched to the natural color of your tooth. Bonding usually requires only one visit, so it is less time-consuming and less expensive than other tooth restoration methods.

The dentist will prepare your tooth for treatment by roughening and shaping or contouring the surface. Next he/she will apply a conditioning solution and bonding agent that together act as a strong adhesive or glue, to ensure that the composite will adhere. Next he/she will apply the putty-like tooth colored composite material, sculpting it to correct the problem areas. Several layers of the composite material may be necessary in order to achieve the best results. To cure and harden the material, a high-intensity light or a chemical agent may be used. Finally, your dentist will smooth and polish your tooth to give it an even, natural contour.

Porcelain Veneers

The makeover show "The Swan" popularizes this cosmetic dental procedure. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that fits over a damaged, discolored, or misshaped tooth. Porcelain is an extremely durable material with a color, translucence and texture that is similar to tooth enamel. It is not susceptible to decay and resists staining while maintaining a natural appearance. It is bonded permanently to the tooth, usually the front ones, by resin cement.

Here are some applications:
The first case is a malaligned fronth teeth. Putting veneers will make the fronth teeth straight.

The second case is that of stained teeth. Porcelain veener is an option to those resistant to tooth whitening procedures and those with "intrinsic" or "inside" teeth discoloration just like that of tetracycline-induced staining (inborn discoloration of the teeth brought about by tetracycline use of the mother during pregnancy).

Enamel reshaping or Tooth contouring

Enamel reshaping is a dental procedure done to fix a chip in a front tooth, some worn edges, or shallow pits or grooves in the tooth enamel. Using a polishing instrument, the dentist removes small amounts of surface enamel of one or more teeth to compensate for the imperfections then follow it up with a smoothing and polishing of all the surrounding teeth. This a quick, simple and painless procedure.

Hair Transplant

The interest in hair replacement has significantly increased over the past ten years. Two out of every three men and one in five women suffer from hair loss. For men, the main cause of a diminishing hairline is heredity. Hormonal changes such as menopause can cause both thinning and hair loss in women.

There are a number of hair replacement techniques that are available, although hair replacement surgery can not help those who suffer from total baldness. Candidates for hair replacement must have a healthy growth of hair at the back and sides of the head. The hair on the back and sides of the head will serve as hair donor areas where grafts and flaps will be taken.

There are four primary different types of hair replacement methods, including:

Fillers

Collagen/fat injectable fillers, also called soft tissue augmentation, is done in order to correct wrinkles, depressions in the skin, and/or scarring. The procedure involves injecting a substance (collagen and/or fat) into the skin in order to plump or fill-up the area being treated. The result of the procedure is usually not permanent and touch-up injections may be needed every 3 to 12 months. For some, however, the collagen injections can stimulate the body's own production of collagen, lengthening the time necessary between follow-up injections.

Injectable collagen
Similar to collagen, a natural protein found in humans, injectable collagen is made from cows. This protein gives support and structure to skin, bones, ligaments, and other body parts. Collagen-related fillers from tissue donors or self-donated are generally utilized to treat wrinkles, scars, and facial lines.

Injectable fat

Injecting one's own fat to correct skin defects is called microlipoinjection. It includes the transfer or recycling of fat from one body area to another allowing the surgeon to recontour the skin. With a tiny needle, the fat is extracted and then reinjected into the selected site. This is often a favored treatment choice since it involves the use of one's own fat eliminating the risk of allergic reactions.

Cost:
Widely varies on the brand of filler and amount used. Cost is usually computed by the amount of filler consumed.

Laser Hair Removal

Millions of men and women with unwanted body hair spend countless hours on temporary hair removal methods - including shaving, waxing, applying chemical depilatories, and tweezing. A traditional semi-permanent method, electrolysis, cauterizes and destroys each individual hair follicle, but this procedure is quite time-consuming.

Laser hair removal is a promising new treatment. The laser works by sending energy into the pigment of the hair shaft, which is absorbed by the surrounding follicle. The heat generated by this process damages the follicle and stops hair production.

Laser hair removal is appropriate for any area where there is excess hair, with the important exception of the eye area. Since the laser works on more than one follicle at a time, larger areas like the back, arms or legs are just as easily treatable as smaller areas like the upper lip or bikini line. However, because the hair is targeted on the basis of color, the hair must be darker than the underlying skin for the laser to be effective.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas and medical spas, in which the stratum cornea (outermost surface of the skin) is removed by light abrasion. Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or a roughened surface. Particles and removed material are usually suctioned off using a small vacuum attached to a wand. Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not painful and requires no anaesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars.

In the past, dermabrasion was done using abrasive crystal. In the past decade, it has become more common to use a wand with a roughened surface. This procedure requires no medical oversight and is commonly used in conjuction with facial spa treatments.

Microdermabrasion is a relative new comer to the United States. This technique was first used in Europe and adopted by United States in the late 1990s. Today, Microdermabrasion is used effectively to treat fine wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars left from moderate to severe acne.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peeling uses a chemical solution in order to improve the skin's appearance. It can reduce or eliminate fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, correct uneven skin pigmentation, remove pre-cancerous skin growths, and soften acne or treat the scars caused by acne. The procedure can also treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and scarring, as well as skin blemishes common with age and heredity. Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs.

Substances used for Chemical Peels:
1. Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels that can often provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. AHA peels may be used to treat:
AHA peels may cause:
Generally, no anesthesia is needed for AHA peels since they cause only a slight stinging sensation during application. Protecting skin from the sun is important following AHA peels.

2. Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) can be used in many concentrations. It is most commonly used for:
Results of TCA peel are usually less dramatic than, and not as long-lasting as, those of a phenol peel. More than one TCA peel may be needed to achieve the desired result. TCA-peel patients are advised to avoid sun exposure for several months. It also may produce some unintended color changes in the skin. It can be used on the neck or other body areas, and may require pre-treatment with Retin-A or AHA creams. It is preferable to a phenol peel for darker-skinned patients. Anesthesia is not usually required for TCA peels because the chemical solution acts as an anesthetic. Sedation may be used before and during the procedure to help the patient relax. Two or more TCA peels may be needed over several months to obtain the desired result, although mild TCA peels may be repeated more frequently. Protecting skin from the sun is important following a TCA peel.

3. Phenol is the strongest of the chemical solutions and produces a deep peel. It is mainly used to:
Phenol:

Recovery may be slow and complete healing may take several months. After a phenol peel, new skin may lose its ability to produce pigment. Skin be lighter in color, and will always have to be protected from the sun. Phenol may pose a special risk for patients with a history of heart disease. Protecting skin from the sun is also important following a phenol peel.

Cost in the Philippines:
Widely varies. Depends on the type of chemical and the coverage of treatment

Botox

The cosmetic procedure Botox has gained increasing popularity due to its simple, effective and noninvasive nature. Botox injections were initially intended for treating people with illnesses such as cerebral palsy and other neurological complications. However, after the discovery of the significant benefit of Botox for eliminating wrinkles and signs of aging, the procedure became popular in cosmetic applications after it was approved by FDA in 2002 for cosmetic purposes.

Botox is administered by an injection with a fine needle. It is most commonly used around the forehead, mouth, and eye area. The procedure typically takes ten minutes and is safely carried out in a clinic or doctor's office. Results from Botox procedures are visible within several days and can last between three and four months. Many people who receive Botox injections elect to have treatments every four or five months to maintain the results.

Recently, concerns regarding Botox procedures in non-medical settings have been mounting among doctors and other medical professionals. With its growing popularity, Botox is now often offered in spas, salons, malls, homes, and non-medical, and often unsafe, locations. By seeking Botox treatment in a non-medical setting, you may be at an increased risk of having an unqualified provider, unsafe conditions, and/or defective products . The only safe place to receive Botox injections is under the care of a qualified cosmetic surgery professional in a doctor's office or clinic.

Botox has become a popular anti-aging cosmetic procedure because of its simplicity, effectiveness, and most importantly, its low risk factor. Botox injections are considered a low risk procedure that can be completed successfully with little or no side effects. The most common short-term side affects associated with Botox treatment may include headaches, flu symptoms, respiratory infection, eyelid drooping or nausea. Less common side effects, primarily associated with the injection process are pain, swelling, redness, bleeding, numbness, muscle weakness, and bruising.

It involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle of the abdominal wall. This type of surgery is usually sought by women (who are not considering having any more children) and individuals who have abdominal fat deposits which do not respond well to diet and exercise.

There are two broad varieties of abdominoplasty:
Complete. Requires from about two to five hours
Partial. Requires from about one to two hours

Facelift

A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (literally, surgical removal of wrinkles), is a procedure used in plastic surgery to give a more youthful appearance. It usually involves the removal of excess fat and skin tissue, the tightening of underlying muscles, and the redraping the skin on the patient's face and neck.

Depending on the area of the face or neck where the "lift" is to take place, the surgeon will separate the skin from the fat and muscle. The fat is then removed and the skin is pulled back into place with any excess removed.

Candidates for Facelift:
The best candidates for a facelift are those whose face and/or neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity. The procedure also works best on persons whose bone structure is strong and well-defined.

Cost here in the Philippines:

Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgical procedure intended to reshape the upper eyelid or lower eyelid by the removal and/or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons. The procedure is used to improve the appearance of sagging upper eyelids and puffy lower "eye bags". When upper eyelid changes are severe in the elderly, blepharoplasty may sometimes be undertaken to open up the field of vision impaired by overhanging skin.

Blepharoplasty is performed through external incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inside surface of the lower eyelid. Initial swelling and bruising take one to two weeks to resolve but at least several months are needed until the final result becomes stable. Depending upon the scope of the procedure, the operation takes one to three hours to complete.

Asian blepharoplasty
, or double eyelid surgery, is the most popular form of cosmetic surgery among those of east and southeast Asian background. About half of this population are born without an eyelid crease and are called single-lidded. Surgery is used to create a crease above the eye, thus making the eye appear more open and alert and facilitating the application of make up.

Cost here in the Philippines:
25,000-100,000+ pesos
(depending on the eyelid needing reshaping: upper, lower or both)
Asian blepharoplasty: 30,000-40,000 pesos

Liposuction

Liposuction or Suction-assisted lipectomy is a popular operation in cosmetic surgery which removes fat from many sites on the human body, (typically the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, arms and elsewhere) via a cannula and aspirator.

While exercise and dieting may be useful for ridding oneself of unwanted weight and fat, some fat deposits may not respond to an individual's efforts at weight loss. Applying liposuction techniques may be an option in these situations.

Liposuction, however, is not a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. It is a form of body contouring and not a weight loss method. The amount of fat removed varies by doctor, method, and patient, but the average amount is typically less than 10 pounds (5 kg).

There are several factors that limit the amount of fat that can be safely removed in one session. Ultimately, the operating physician and the patient make the decision.

Reports of people removing 50 pounds (25 kg) of fat are exaggerated. However, the contouring possible with liposuction may cause the appearance of weight loss to be greater than the actual amount of fat removed. The procedure may be performed under general or local ("tumescent") anesthesia - the latter appears to have a better safety record.

Complications from a Liposuction:
Good Candidates for Liposuction:
Generally people of normal weight who have localized areas of protruding fat acquire the most desired results, but patients who are slightly overweight can also benefit from liposuction. The best candidates for liposuction are:
Age is not a major factor, although older patients, with diminished skin elasticity, may not have the same results as patient's with tighter skin.

Cost here in the Philippines:
35,000-50,000 pesos
(for one site only) plus hospital expenses

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a type of plastic surgery that is used to improve the function or appearance of a person's nose. Rhinoplasty is also commonly called a "nose job" or a "nose surgery."

There are generally three types of "nose jobs" - nasal bridge augmentation and reduction, nasal tip augmentation and reduction, and alar plasty. Nasal bridge augmentation (popularly known among Filipinos as "nose lift") is the one usually requested by Asians, which entails changing the height the nose bridge. Aar plasty is a procedure wherein the base of the nose is altered or reduced to reveal a narrower nostrils. Finally, nasal tip augmentation and reduction enhances the tip of the nose. These procedures may be done singly or in combination to achieve more flattering results.

Rhinoplasty is usually done on outpatient basis and can be performed under a general anesthetic or with local anesthetic, depending on patient or doctor preference. The surgeon may shape a small piece of the patient's own cartilage or bone to add to, strengthen, or increase the structure of the nose. However, here in the Philippines, the more commonly used material to augment the nasal bridge is the silicone L-shaped implants.

Cost here in the Philippines:
25,000-50,000 pesos
depending on the type of anesthesia and procedures (nasal bridge augmentation, alar plasty, nasal tip, or combination)

Reconstructive surgery focuses on undoing or masking the destructive effects of trauma, burn, surgery or disease and improving the function of the affected body parts. Meanwhile, Cosmetic (or aesthetic) surgery is most often performed in order to change features the patient finds unflattering and to augment his/her appearance.
