Gretchen Barretto's Lips
Last week, I stumbled upon a tabloid with a column of Jojo Gabinete. I couldn't remember the tabloid. The column feautured an interview of Rachel Alejandro and Geneva Cruz by the mentioned journalist. When asked who among the Filipino celebrities who has had plastic surgery but never admitted it yet, Rachel Alejandro answered "Gretchen Baretto's lips." Did she really have had Lip Augmentation?Sorry, I couldn't find old photos (especially from That's Entertainment's days). Here are some newer ones, I think.

Then, today, I taped this interview of Gretchen Barretto by Boy Abunda (this was due to her rift with Dawn Zulueta) aired on The Buzz. (Sorry for the landscape configuration. I don't know how to turn it clockwise.)
Be the judge!
P.S. Oh by the way. The tabloid feature was really shocking. There was also a question there if how many one-night stands the two singers have had. Geneva answered 3 - one of them Kempee de Leon. And regarding the plastic surgery, Geneva answered Zsa Zsa Padilla's breasts.

Tom Cruise's Nose

Lately, Tom Cruise has been all over the news, from his jumping-off-the-couch scene in Oprah after revealing his relationship with 11-years younger Katie Holmes to his radical idealogy as a member of the Church of Scientology. This week, it has been announced that Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures parted ways afer 2 decades of doing blockbuster movies together.

*NSYNC Lance Bass: Gay and Plastic

Lance Bass
Last week, gossips were spreading that he is gay. He was seen hanging out with Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl, also a known homosexual, on a popular gay bar in Massachussetts during the July 4 weekend. As I was writing this, Lance already made a "coming-out" statement on People magazine.
"I'm not ashamed," Bass reportedly told the magazine. "I'm more liberated and happy than I've been my whole life."
Bass says that he's involved with Reichen Lehmkuhl and reportedly says that he kept his sexuality a secret mostly out of concern that it would hurt the boy band.
So there.

Kris Aquino's Plastic Surgeries

Kris Aquino
Filipino celebrity who went under the knife? Who else but Kris Aquino! She's one the most vocal advocate of plastic surgeries in the Philippines. She admitted it many times over the Buzz, and even on one of her TV commercials for Smart. Tummy tuck, breast augmentation, and liposuction all over her body (neck, waist, hips etc.) are the procedures known to be done on her by no less than Dr. Vicki Belo, the doctor for the stars, and her partners in the Belo Medical Group. And basing from this photo, she could even have had a nose lift.

Britney Spears' Boob job and Nose Job
Next, the more popular procedure she had underwent was breast augmentation. It has been rumored that in the year 2000, during the height of the popularity of her debut album, she had breast implants put on her (see, the SNL guesting photo). However, she allegedly had it removed to be replaced by smaller implants. Look at her pregnant picture, it's noticeably smaller eventhough she's lactating. Ooops, she did it again and again!
Look at the evolution of her breasts .

Claudine Barretto's Veneers
Claudine had been rumored to have had breast augmentation. However, that's not what this post is all about.
For those who have watched her wedding with Raymart Santiago on ABS-CBN, I know you have noticed that her looks changed a lot (ok, imagine her again smiling, wearing the bridal gown and compare it with her picture above taken years ago). My sister remarked that it was probably the nose or a cheek implant. Possible. But, the most remarkable, the one I noticed readily, was her set of teeth. Those white straight fronth row of teeth could probably be veneers. Why? Again, look at the above photo. It's a fact that her malaligned teeth had been a perennial problem, ever since the start of her career. Remember, she wore braces numerous times before. On her wedding, her teeth were straight, white and quite big.

Rosanna Roces' Plastic Surgeries

Osang was probably one in showbiz who popularized plastic surgery. When it was still considered a taboo in the mid- to late 90s in the Philippines, she was one of the first who admitted that she went under the knife. Look at the inset photo, she was still Anna Maceda when this picture was taken. Notably, she have had rhinoplasty. But, she's famous for her liposuction sessions prior to her rift with Dr. Vicki Belo. Last year, Lolit Solis, another friend turned enemy, described her as "mukhang unggoy" before the surgery.

Plastic Surgery and the Entertainment Industry
I got this article from Ezine. Although it was written by an American and she was referring to Hollywood, still, some of her points are relevant to our setting. Take a look; this is an interesting read.In an industry where you are judged primarily on your looks and your age, plastic surgery is almost mandatory for any age group. It's becoming just as important in the corporate world, too. Artists and executives are more likely to get hired if they appear young, trim and attractive. A nip here, a tuck there and you're good to go.
But what happens when something goes terribly wrong? We've seen some very odd sightings both on the streets of LA and on the covers of various supermarket tabloids. Burt Reynolds and Farrah Fawcett seem to have their skin pulled so tightly that their faces are actually misshapen. Joan Rivers jokes about talking through her navel after so many face lifts. Then there's the infamous Michael Jackson.
A plastic surgeon on the Discovery Channel recently stated that Michael Jackson's nose is actually dying from all the surgery. They displayed a recent picture of Michael Jackson in court and the skin was actually peeling off his nose. And now there is speculation that his nose is really a prosthesis.
While these particular surgeries are all considered elective, many plastic surgeries are required to correct a serous defect or repair someone after an accident, or to correct a medical situation brought about by a previous surgery.
So, how do you choose a reputable plastic surgeon and minimize the potential disastrous effects of surgery or surgical complications? People on the "A" list in the entertainment industry get recommendations from other celebrities who have had skilled surgeons work on them. But, what do the rest of us do? You know, those of us who don't make $25 million a picture or have $43 million record deals do?
The sad fact is that many individuals base their decision on whether their doctor participates in their insurance program's PPO or HMO. Others base their decision on the price of the surgery. Neither of these methods guarantees a skilled surgeon, and if you're shopping around for a bargain deal, limit that to what you can find at the local Wal-Mart, not your surgeon. You're risking your life if you do. There have been numerous horror stories and even deaths resulting from bargain basement surgeons promising beautiful breast or a youthful appearance.
Since it appears as if it's almost mandatory that people in the entertainment industry get plastic surgery at some point in their careers, you need to choose wisely. Here are a few questions you should ask when seeking out a skilled and reputable surgeon.
1. Get several recommendations from verifiable and reliable sources.
2. Check with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to verify if he or she is in good standing. Here is their website: http://www.plasticsurgery.org/. Also go to the American Board of Plastic Surgeons: http://www.abplsurg.org/ to see if the doctors you are considering are listed.
The American Board of Plastic Surgeons is the only specialty board responsible for certifying plastic surgeons approved by the American Medical Association and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Any doctor who is certified by the board must meet the following requirements:You can also check with the Federal Trade Commission for instructions: http://www.ftc.gov/. Don't go strictly by the certificates on the wall. Anyone can look impressive by printing up (or ordering) a certificate or a diploma and getting a good framer.
- They must have graduated from a school, which is accredited at the time of graduation by the Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), a Canadian Medical School accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS), or from a United States osteopathic school accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- They must have completed a minimum of three years clinical training in general surgery, or complete an approved residency in orthopedic surgery, or be certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.
- They must have completed a minimum of two to three years approved residency training for plastic surgery in the United States or Canada.
- They must have successfully passed a written, practical and oral examination in plastic surgery.
- They must maintain an ethical standing in the community as well as moral status.
Ask questions of the doctor!!! Find out what percentage of his surgical practice is spent performing the type surgery you are interested in. Find out the length of time your doctor has invested in training for the procedure, as well as how many of the procedure you are choosing to undertake they have performed in total and how many years they have actually performed it. Ask how many of these surgeries were successful and how many were not. Ask what they attributed for the negative results. Find out what happened and why so it doesn't happen to you. Also find out if they are continuing their education to keep fresh in the field.
If the doctor is resentful or cops an attitude because you ask detailed questions and expect complete answers from them, walk away, going on to the next doctor on your list. They should have nothing to hide. There are dentists who have gone to a weekend seminar and are now certified to do liposuction. Now that's scary! Plastic surgery is a very lucrative business with billions of dollars spent annually. Everyone wants his or her piece of the pie. Make sure to verify all information with reliable sources.
1. Tell your doctor you would like to speak to some of his patients who have already had similar procedures done. Most reputable surgeons adhere to this practice.
2. Get a second opinion from the second doctor on your list and repeat steps 2-4 again before you make your decision. Ask yourself an important question: "Who did I feel, gut level feeling, more comfortable with?" Then and only then, make your informed decision.
While all of these steps may seem like overkill, and may take some time, they will save you years of additional reconstructive surgery and thousands of dollars if you ask questions, verify information and practice patience at the onset.
A year and a half ago I had a medical need to undergo breast reduction. I had insurance and simply chose a provider on my list. I made my decision based on my insurance carrier. I didn't do my due diligence and check the doctor out as I am advocating you do. Unfortunately, a year after the surgery, I was still suffering from infection, hardening and complete numbness in both breasts, not just in one area. Additionally the surgery left me with a deformity on both sides that caused problems both physically and esthetically. I had to undergo more surgery as a result, but once again I was at a loss of who to go to, or more importantly who I should trust.
A good friend of mine had a child who unfortunately needed to undergo plastic surgery. She knew my plight and recommended her child's doctor. I was little apprehensive as you can imagine.
I spoke to other friends about future surgery. I mentioned my thoughts about using this doctor. And, to my surprise, many of them had heard of him. Apparently he is very famous in the entertainment industry and extremely well respected.
After seeing him, I understood how he had earned his reputation. He and his staff were, and are incredible! I have never been to any doctor who was as thorough or able to put me as much at ease.
Needless to say I'm doing extremely well now because of him and his staff's skill and care. After all I went through with such an essential part of my physical body and appearance, as well as my personal health, I am on the road to recovery finally.
Take a word of warning from someone who has "been there, done that," do your research. If you choose poorly, especially while working in an industry that places so much emphasis on physical beauty, you may no longer have the career you once had; and more importantly, you may not have your health or your life. Just as you practiced your craft to become the best at what you do, carefully pick a surgeon who has put the same care and effort into his training. In this case you will get what you pay for.

Plastic Surgery of the Week: Kenny Rogers

When he appeared on the American Idol the other week, I was like, "No way! That's not Kenny Rogers! Ryan Seacrest might have read a wrong script. He's more like Burt Reynolds." But, yes, it was really him! What happened? Daily Dish reports:
Rogers Mortified by Plastic Surgery Mishap
Country music star Kenny Rogers is devastated by the appearance of his face after a botched plastic surgery procedure. The 67-year-old singer became self-conscious about lines around his eyes and decided to have an eye operation last year. He explains, "I went in and got my eyes done, and I'm not happy about it.
"(The surgeon) is going to go in and fix that for me. They're too tight around the eyelids for me. It drives me crazy!" The music legend admits he's had plastic surgery throughout his career, but could be having second thoughts about doing anything else after the debacle. He adds, "If we can fix that, then I'll be glad I did it. If we can't fix it, I'll regret it or get used to it."

Yeah, I know you were surprised. Actually, I need your opinions on this one. My lola, who went home from the States, was the one I know who first noticed Mayor Vi's looks. I remember her saying, just last year when we were watching an episode of The Buzz, that Ate Vi had lost her chinita look. I don't know if it was just normal aging, or did she have had an Asian Blepharoplasty on her upper eyelids? Look at her upper eyelids. Are those just an illusion made by the eye shadows? Or, is it an Upper Eyelid Surgery westernizing her eyes and making it deep-set? A brow lift is also possible. What do you think?

Choosing the Right Surgeon
Unfortunately, here in the Philippines, the law is lenient regarding its guidelines of who are allowed to do Plastic Surgery Procedures. I know you will be shock when I tell you that any person with a medical license or who passed the Physician's Licensure Examination can do this procedure even without sufficient training. So, your safeguard to a safer and satisfying transformation can be ensured only by you by following these tips:- Learn about the procedures that interest you.
- Learn about and verify your selected surgeon's qualifications and experience. This is the most important. Be sure to check his affiliations and the plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery societies he is a member of.
- Ask questions.
- Get second opinions.
- Talk to other plastic surgery patients.
- View before and after pictures.
- Get referrals from friends and family if possible.
- Learn what to expect before, during, and after your desired procedure.
- Evaluate your motivations, goals, and expectations of plastic surgery.
Doing these things will help to ensure that your plastic surgery experience is an overwhelming success!

Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery, a.k.a Bariatric Surgery, makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss. The most common gastric bypass surgery is a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
In normal digestion, food passes through the stomach and enters the small intestine, where most of the nutrients and calories are absorbed. It then passes into the large intestine(colon), and the remaining waste is eventually excreted.
In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is made smaller by creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach using surgical staples or a plastic band. The smaller stomach is connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine (jejunum), bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum).
This procedure can be done by making a large incision in the abdomen (an open procedure) or by making a small incision and using small instruments and a camera to guide the surgery (laparoscopic approach).

MY ACCUTANE EXPERIENCE
My Acutane Experience
I have been suffering with acne since I was 14 years old. I had tried all prescription topical medications there were and had undergone several procedures like comedo extraction regularly. I can say that my acne was controlled until I reached 4th year college (with the thesis and graduation coming up and all those stresses) when acne suddenly flared up. It was not your ordinary pimple, but really big ones all over my face - we referred to it in Medicine as fluctuant cystic acne probably with sinus tracts. It just means that I had really big pimples with pus and other pimples are just so big that they rupture and communicate with other through tracts underneath the skin. In short, it was the worst!!! My derma was so surprised when I consulted her.Without doing any detailed history and thorough examination, she recommended Isotretinoin. The brand name is Accutane in the US and Roaccutane in the Philippines for it is marketed by Roche. The good thing with this oral medication, as she explained, is that it targets the 4 MAIN FACTORS in acne formation. But she warned me that it was expensive. It cost me around 22,000 pesos - a regimen of oral drug costing 120 pesos a day for 6 months. I consulted my parents first. Fortunately, they financed it.
It was a tiny maroon capsule, but it really worked wonders. In just around a month, my face improved. Although, the most undesirable and conspicuous side effect was the chapping of my lips. It really dried my skin and lips. I had to liberally put moisturizer, sometimes petroleum jelly, on my skin and bring lip balm most of the time. Fortunately, that was the only side effect I experienced. In the US, there were reports of depression and suicide associated with Accutane intake especially among teenagers. It is also a teratogen which can cause birth defects if given to a pregnant mom. Accutane is a REGULATED DRUG here in the Philippines. You cannot get it just anywhere. During that time, I had availed it only through my physician and at Mercury Drug Quiapo Branch. Other Mercury Drug Branches don't carry it. In the Mercury Drug, I had to furnish them with two copies of prescription and present an ID. One time, they even called my doctor to confirm the prescription. Actually, there is a topical formulation of Accutane here in the Philippines manufactured by Stiefel. But, my dermatologist warned me against using those. It is not as effective as the oral Accutane medication.
After 6 months, my face really cleared up, of course except those deep scars which are inevitable on cystic acne. I was so happy that the derma brought it up. Actually, she had been recommending it even during the first years of my acne. However, I turned it down because of its cost. But, it's worth it, every peso of it. Now, after 3 years, my face is really acne-free. I would sometimes have a pimple, but they would appear singly. My derma said that I would expect it to be like this for the next five years or so, but of course, I still have to have regular peeling and apply topical tretinoin regularly.
I am now saving up to have my scars filled up with collagen fillers.
P.S. I reckon that it would be better if I post my pre- and post- Accutane pictures. Ok, I'll look for those photos.

Acne Treatment
These are the 4 IMPORTANT FACTORS in the formation of ACNE:- Increased Sebum or Oil Production
- Abnormal keratinization (sloughing off of dead skin cells) causing comedones (whiteheads and blackheads)
- Proliferation of Propionebacterium acne bacteria
- Inflammation
Prescription Medications for Treating Acne
- Isotretinoin (Accutane) - the reserve drug against acne. Usually given for severe cystic acne and those resistant with antibiotics, interlesional steroid, and topicals. Click here to read MY PERSONAL ACCOUNT on the use of ACCUTANE.
- Interlesional Steroid - When an acne cyst becomes severely inflamed, there is a good chance that it will rupture and scarring may result. To treat these severely inflamed cysts and prevent scarring, dermatologists may inject such cysts with a much-diluted corticosteroid. This lessens the inflammation and promotes healing. An interlesional corticosteroid injection works by "melting" the cyst over a period of 3 to 5 days. Kenacort-A (Generic: Triamcinolone acetonide) is the available formulation in the Philippines.
- Oral Antibiotics - given to reduce the population of the bacteria P. acnes which is associated with the inflammatory process of acne formation. Antibiotics include tetracycline, erythromycin, clindamycin, and minocycline. The regimen is usually one dose a day for a week or two. But, the regimen varies on the severity of the acne and the drug to be used.
- Oral Contraceptives - the most popular here in the Philippines is the Diane. Oral contraceptives have been shown to effectively clear acne in women by suppressing the overactive sebaceous glands and can be used as long-term acne therapy.
- Topical antimicrobials - just like the oral antibiotics, its purpose is to control growth of P. acnes. This includes azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, erythromycin, and sodium sulfacetamide. The use of these entails religious daily long-time application.
- Topical retinoids - the mechanism of action of this group of drug is to unclog the pores by sloughing off the upper dead cells of the skin, a mechanism called desquamation. These prevent formation of whiteheads and blackheads. Adapalene, tazatorene, and TRETINOIN are examples. TRETINOIN has been referred by dermatologist to be A MAINSTAY IN ACNE TREATMENT.
Physical Procedures for Treating Acne
- Chemical Peels
- Comedo extraction - To extract whiteheads and blackheads, dermatologists use a sterile pen-sized device. This procedure should only be performed by a dermatologist or other medical professional. Patients' attempts to extract comedones and drain cysts by squeezing or picking, can lead to worsening of the acne, scarring and infection.
- Drainage and Surgical Excision - Some large cysts do not respond to medication and may require drainage and extraction. Drainage and extraction, which is also called "acne surgery," reduces the pain associated with these cysts and decreases the likelihood of scarring. It should not be performed by patients. Dermatologists are trained in the proper technique and perform "acne surgery" under sterile conditions.
- Phototherapy (Laser and Light Treatments) - Several laser and light treatments are available to treat acne. Some of these laser and light treatments target only one factor that causes acne - P. acnes. For many patients, this is not a comprehensive treatment for resolving their acne. A dermatologist can determine if laser or light treatment is appropriate for a patient.

Dental Bonding
In dental bonding, a composite resin material is applied to the tooth and then sculpted and shaped to cover damaged areas or to fill in gaps. This material comes in several shades so it can be matched to the natural color of your tooth. Bonding usually requires only one visit, so it is less time-consuming and less expensive than other tooth restoration methods. The dentist will prepare your tooth for treatment by roughening and shaping or contouring the surface. Next he/she will apply a conditioning solution and bonding agent that together act as a strong adhesive or glue, to ensure that the composite will adhere. Next he/she will apply the putty-like tooth colored composite material, sculpting it to correct the problem areas. Several layers of the composite material may be necessary in order to achieve the best results. To cure and harden the material, a high-intensity light or a chemical agent may be used. Finally, your dentist will smooth and polish your tooth to give it an even, natural contour.

Porcelain Veneers
The makeover show "The Swan" popularizes this cosmetic dental procedure. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that fits over a damaged, discolored, or misshaped tooth. Porcelain is an extremely durable material with a color, translucence and texture that is similar to tooth enamel. It is not susceptible to decay and resists staining while maintaining a natural appearance. It is bonded permanently to the tooth, usually the front ones, by resin cement.
Here are some applications:
The first case is a malaligned fronth teeth. Putting veneers will make the fronth teeth straight.

The second case is that of stained teeth. Porcelain veener is an option to those resistant to tooth whitening procedures and those with "intrinsic" or "inside" teeth discoloration just like that of tetracycline-induced staining (inborn discoloration of the teeth brought about by tetracycline use of the mother during pregnancy).

Tooth whitening
How to achieve a perfect white smile? When you consult a dentist, she/he would usually recommend 3 types of bleaching procedures:- In-house whitening procedures done in the dentist's clinic. For laser and power bleaching, a special bleaching solution – usually containing hydrogen peroxide - is applied to the teeth. A high intensity light or laser is directed at the teeth and activates the bleaching agent, causing the gel to release the oxygen molecules. Treatments for both power and laser bleaching can take as little as 45 minutes, but usually last somewhere between one and two hours.
- Home bleaching is performed at home, under the indirect supervision of a dentist. At the first appointment, the dentist takes impressions of the patient's teeth and then creates a perfectly fitted mouthpiece. This mouthpiece will allow the patient to apply a bleaching solution to the teeth while protecting the rest of the mouth from contact with the bleaching chemicals. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in the gel is not as strong as that used in power or laser bleaching procedures. No strong light source or laser is needed to activate the bleaching agent. Instead, it is contact with something organic, in this case the teeth, which causes the gel to release oxygen. In most cases, home bleaching can take from one to three weeks to achieve maximum results.
- Alternatives. There are over-the-counter home bleaching kits available in pharmacies and groceries like the popular Crest Whitening products. However, even with its popularity, it is still best to consult this to your dentist to avoid risks.

Hair Transplant
The interest in hair replacement has significantly increased over the past ten years. Two out of every three men and one in five women suffer from hair loss. For men, the main cause of a diminishing hairline is heredity. Hormonal changes such as menopause can cause both thinning and hair loss in women. There are a number of hair replacement techniques that are available, although hair replacement surgery can not help those who suffer from total baldness. Candidates for hair replacement must have a healthy growth of hair at the back and sides of the head. The hair on the back and sides of the head will serve as hair donor areas where grafts and flaps will be taken.
There are four primary different types of hair replacement methods, including:
- Hair transplantation - during hair transplantation the surgeon removes small pieces of hair-bearing scalp grafts from the back or sides of the head. These grafts are then relocated to a bald or thinning area.
- Tissue expansion - in this procedure, a device called a tissue expander is placed underneath a hair-bearing area that is located next to a bald area. After several weeks, the tissue expander causes the skin to grow new skin cells. Another operation is then required placing the newly expanded skin over the adjacent bald spot.
- Flap surgery - flap surgery is ideal for covering large balding areas. During this procedure a portion of the bald area is removed and a flap of the hair-bearing skin is placed on to the bald area while still attached at one end to its original blood supply.
- Scalp reduction - scalp reduction is done in order to cover the bald areas at the top and back of the head. This technique involves the removal of the bald scalp with sections of the hair-bearing scalp pulled together filling in the bald area.

Fillers
Collagen/fat injectable fillers, also called soft tissue augmentation, is done in order to correct wrinkles, depressions in the skin, and/or scarring. The procedure involves injecting a substance (collagen and/or fat) into the skin in order to plump or fill-up the area being treated. The result of the procedure is usually not permanent and touch-up injections may be needed every 3 to 12 months. For some, however, the collagen injections can stimulate the body's own production of collagen, lengthening the time necessary between follow-up injections.Injectable collagen
Similar to collagen, a natural protein found in humans, injectable collagen is made from cows. This protein gives support and structure to skin, bones, ligaments, and other body parts. Collagen-related fillers from tissue donors or self-donated are generally utilized to treat wrinkles, scars, and facial lines.
Injectable fat
Injecting one's own fat to correct skin defects is called microlipoinjection. It includes the transfer or recycling of fat from one body area to another allowing the surgeon to recontour the skin. With a tiny needle, the fat is extracted and then reinjected into the selected site. This is often a favored treatment choice since it involves the use of one's own fat eliminating the risk of allergic reactions.
Cost:
Widely varies on the brand of filler and amount used. Cost is usually computed by the amount of filler consumed.

Vein Removal and Sclerotherapy
Varicose veins are caused by swollen or enlarged blood vessels. The blood vessels have enlarged due a weakening in the vein's wall or valves. Located deeper in the skin than spider veins, they can appear raised and often are blue.Varicose veins can be serious because it may be associated with the development of one or more of the following conditions:
- phlebitis - inflammation of the vein
- thromboses - occurs when blood clots form in the enlarged vein
- venous stasis ulcers - an ulcer is formed when there is not proper drainage in the enlarged vein
Treatment for varicose veins:
There are a number of options to choose from in regards to the treatment of varicose or spider veins. They are as follows:
- Sclerotherapy. This procedure involves the injection of a concentrated saline or specially-developed solution into the spider or varicose vein. The solution then hardens causing the vein to close up or collapse. Healthier blood vessels located nearby absorb the blood flow of the collapsed vein.
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy involves the removal of the vein by tiny punctures or incisions along the path of the enlarged vein. Through these tiny holes, the surgeon uses a surgical hook to remove the varicose vein.
- Electrodesiccation. This procedure involves the sealing of the veins with the use of an electrical current.
- Laser surgery and intense pulsed light therapy. Abnormal veins are destroyed by high intensity laser beams or intense pulsating light.
- Surgical ligation and stripping. This procedure involves the surgeon making an incision in the skin and removing or tying off the blood vessel.

Laser Hair Removal
Millions of men and women with unwanted body hair spend countless hours on temporary hair removal methods - including shaving, waxing, applying chemical depilatories, and tweezing. A traditional semi-permanent method, electrolysis, cauterizes and destroys each individual hair follicle, but this procedure is quite time-consuming.Laser hair removal is a promising new treatment. The laser works by sending energy into the pigment of the hair shaft, which is absorbed by the surrounding follicle. The heat generated by this process damages the follicle and stops hair production.
Laser hair removal is appropriate for any area where there is excess hair, with the important exception of the eye area. Since the laser works on more than one follicle at a time, larger areas like the back, arms or legs are just as easily treatable as smaller areas like the upper lip or bikini line. However, because the hair is targeted on the basis of color, the hair must be darker than the underlying skin for the laser to be effective.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion (often referred to as Microderm) is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas and medical spas, in which the stratum cornea (outermost surface of the skin) is removed by light abrasion. Different methods include mechanical abrasion from jets of zinc oxide or a roughened surface. Particles and removed material are usually suctioned off using a small vacuum attached to a wand. Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on the skin. The procedure is not painful and requires no anaesthetic. Microdermabrasion can be used medically for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars. In the past, dermabrasion was done using abrasive crystal. In the past decade, it has become more common to use a wand with a roughened surface. This procedure requires no medical oversight and is commonly used in conjuction with facial spa treatments.
Microdermabrasion is a relative new comer to the United States. This technique was first used in Europe and adopted by United States in the late 1990s. Today, Microdermabrasion is used effectively to treat fine wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars left from moderate to severe acne.

Chemical Peel
Chemical peeling uses a chemical solution in order to improve the skin's appearance. It can reduce or eliminate fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, correct uneven skin pigmentation, remove pre-cancerous skin growths, and soften acne or treat the scars caused by acne. The procedure can also treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and scarring, as well as skin blemishes common with age and heredity. Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, and legs.Substances used for Chemical Peels:
1. Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels that can often provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. AHA peels may be used to treat:
- fine wrinkling
- areas of dryness
- uneven pigmentation
- aid in control of acne
- smooth rough, dry skin
- improve texture of sun-damaged skin
- stinging
- redness
- irritation
- crusting, flaking or scaling
- dryness
2. Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) can be used in many concentrations. It is most commonly used for:
- medium-depth peeling for surface wrinkles
- superficial blemishes
- pigment problems
3. Phenol is the strongest of the chemical solutions and produces a deep peel. It is mainly used to:
- correct blotches caused by sun exposure, birth-control pills, or aging.
- smooth out coarse wrinkles.
- remove pre-cancerous growths.
- should be used on the face only, as scarring may result if used on the neck or other body areas.
- is not recommended for dark-skinned individuals.
- may pose risk for patients with heart problems.
- may permanently remove facial freckles.
- may cause permanent skin lightening.
- may leave lines of demarcation.
Recovery may be slow and complete healing may take several months. After a phenol peel, new skin may lose its ability to produce pigment. Skin be lighter in color, and will always have to be protected from the sun. Phenol may pose a special risk for patients with a history of heart disease. Protecting skin from the sun is also important following a phenol peel.
Cost in the Philippines:
Widely varies. Depends on the type of chemical and the coverage of treatment

Botox
The cosmetic procedure Botox has gained increasing popularity due to its simple, effective and noninvasive nature. Botox injections were initially intended for treating people with illnesses such as cerebral palsy and other neurological complications. However, after the discovery of the significant benefit of Botox for eliminating wrinkles and signs of aging, the procedure became popular in cosmetic applications after it was approved by FDA in 2002 for cosmetic purposes.Botox is administered by an injection with a fine needle. It is most commonly used around the forehead, mouth, and eye area. The procedure typically takes ten minutes and is safely carried out in a clinic or doctor's office. Results from Botox procedures are visible within several days and can last between three and four months. Many people who receive Botox injections elect to have treatments every four or five months to maintain the results.
Recently, concerns regarding Botox procedures in non-medical settings have been mounting among doctors and other medical professionals. With its growing popularity, Botox is now often offered in spas, salons, malls, homes, and non-medical, and often unsafe, locations. By seeking Botox treatment in a non-medical setting, you may be at an increased risk of having an unqualified provider, unsafe conditions, and/or defective products . The only safe place to receive Botox injections is under the care of a qualified cosmetic surgery professional in a doctor's office or clinic.
Botox has become a popular anti-aging cosmetic procedure because of its simplicity, effectiveness, and most importantly, its low risk factor. Botox injections are considered a low risk procedure that can be completed successfully with little or no side effects. The most common short-term side affects associated with Botox treatment may include headaches, flu symptoms, respiratory infection, eyelid drooping or nausea. Less common side effects, primarily associated with the injection process are pain, swelling, redness, bleeding, numbness, muscle weakness, and bruising.

Facelift
A facelift, technically known as a rhytidectomy (literally, surgical removal of wrinkles), is a procedure used in plastic surgery to give a more youthful appearance. It usually involves the removal of excess fat and skin tissue, the tightening of underlying muscles, and the redraping the skin on the patient's face and neck.Depending on the area of the face or neck where the "lift" is to take place, the surgeon will separate the skin from the fat and muscle. The fat is then removed and the skin is pulled back into place with any excess removed.
Candidates for Facelift:
The best candidates for a facelift are those whose face and/or neck have begun to sag, but whose skin still has some elasticity. The procedure also works best on persons whose bone structure is strong and well-defined.
Cost here in the Philippines:
60,000-150,000 pesos depending on the site

Breast Augmentation
Augmentaion mammaplasty or more commonly known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, breast lift, and boob job is a very popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure which entails the use of breast implants.A breast implant is a prosthesis used in cosmetic surgery to enlarge the size of a woman's breasts (known as breast augmentation), or to reconstruct the breast (after mastectomy or removal of breast due to breast cancer). It is a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or saline
Types of breast implants:
- Saline-filled
- Silicone gel-filled
- No contraindications. Anyone can have this.
- Peri-Areolar - a semicircular incision around the lower half of the areola.
- Infra-Mammary - a transverse incision following the line of the infra-mammary fold.
- Axillary - an incision in the axilla (armpit) with a tunnel made through to the breast.
- The infra-mammary incision is one widely used by surgeons because of minimal scarring and the scar is concealed.
- Infection. This is most common within a week after surgery. The infection can be treated with antibiotics or, in severe cases, the implant is removed for several months until the infection is gone and then a new implant is inserted.
- Capsular contracture. This occurs if the scar or capsule around the implant begins to tighten. Treatment can involve either the removal or "scoring" of the scar tissue, or the removal or replacement of the implant.
- Oversensitivity, undersensitivity and/or small patches of numbness near the incisions may occur in some patients. The symptoms usually disappear within time, but may be permanent in some patients.
- Leaking or rupturing of silicone and gel implants. This can occur as a result of an injury or even from the normal compression and movement of the breast and implant.
It is usually an out-patient procedure and can be done in less than 2 hours under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
Cost here in the Philippines:
60,000 to 200,000+ pesos

Blepharoplasty or Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic plastic surgical procedure intended to reshape the upper eyelid or lower eyelid by the removal and/or repositioning of excess tissue as well as by reinforcement of surrounding muscles and tendons. The procedure is used to improve the appearance of sagging upper eyelids and puffy lower "eye bags". When upper eyelid changes are severe in the elderly, blepharoplasty may sometimes be undertaken to open up the field of vision impaired by overhanging skin.Blepharoplasty is performed through external incisions made along the natural skin lines of the eyelids, such as the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inside surface of the lower eyelid. Initial swelling and bruising take one to two weeks to resolve but at least several months are needed until the final result becomes stable. Depending upon the scope of the procedure, the operation takes one to three hours to complete.
Asian blepharoplasty, or double eyelid surgery, is the most popular form of cosmetic surgery among those of east and southeast Asian background. About half of this population are born without an eyelid crease and are called single-lidded. Surgery is used to create a crease above the eye, thus making the eye appear more open and alert and facilitating the application of make up.
Cost here in the Philippines:
25,000-100,000+ pesos
(depending on the eyelid needing reshaping: upper, lower or both)

Liposuction
Liposuction or Suction-assisted lipectomy is a popular operation in cosmetic surgery which removes fat from many sites on the human body, (typically the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, arms and elsewhere) via a cannula and aspirator. While exercise and dieting may be useful for ridding oneself of unwanted weight and fat, some fat deposits may not respond to an individual's efforts at weight loss. Applying liposuction techniques may be an option in these situations.
Liposuction, however, is not a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. It is a form of body contouring and not a weight loss method. The amount of fat removed varies by doctor, method, and patient, but the average amount is typically less than 10 pounds (5 kg).
There are several factors that limit the amount of fat that can be safely removed in one session. Ultimately, the operating physician and the patient make the decision.
Reports of people removing 50 pounds (25 kg) of fat are exaggerated. However, the contouring possible with liposuction may cause the appearance of weight loss to be greater than the actual amount of fat removed. The procedure may be performed under general or local ("tumescent") anesthesia - the latter appears to have a better safety record.
Complications from a Liposuction:
- injury to the skin or deeper tissues
- irregular skin surface
- greater risks if large areas are treated. The risk for infection, the formation of blood clots or fat clots, excessive fluid loss, and damage to the skin, nerves, or vital organs is greater when large areas are treated.
- lidocaine toxicity or fluid in the lungs
Generally people of normal weight who have localized areas of protruding fat acquire the most desired results, but patients who are slightly overweight can also benefit from liposuction. The best candidates for liposuction are:
- normal-weight (or slightly-overweight) people
- people with firm, elastic skin
- people who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas
- physically healthy and psychologically stable people
- people with realistic expectations
Cost here in the Philippines:
35,000-50,000 pesos
(for one site only) plus hospital expenses
